Post-natal treatment

This period is the most critical phase in mothers and newborn babies lives. Most of the maternal and infant deaths occur during the time of postnatal treatment. Yet, this is the most neglected period for the provision of quality care.

What is meant by the postnatal period exactly?

In postnatal period immediately after the birth of a child and extending it up to six weeks. Less oftenly used are the terms puerperium or puerperal period. Lochia is postpartum vaginal normal discharge, which containing blood, mucus, and uterine tissue.

Postnatal care is also called as PNC which is the care given to the mother and her newborn baby immediately after the birth and for the first six weeks of life.

In postnatal contact of every stage, parents should be offered an information and advice to enable them to:

Identify signs and symptoms of common health problems seen in babies.

Assess their baby's general condition.

Contact a healthcare professional or emergency service if it required.
