What is Laparoscopic cystectomy?

Laparoscopic cystectomy Cystectomy is a surgical procedure of an ovarian cyst. During menstrual cycle, a follicle forms on ovary. A follicle is a fluid filled sac that contains an egg. In some cases, if the follicle fails to rupture and release an egg, the fluid rests in the follicle and forms a cyst. This is called an ovarian cyst. Women experience pressure, lump, pain in the abdomen, tenderness during intercourse and kinky painful periods. Most ovarian cysts will terminate on own without any treatment. If not surgery is an option if the cyst does not go away even with medication. During cystectomy, ovarian cyst is pull off either with laparoscopy, or an open surgery. A small cut is usually made below the navel. A laparoscope is inserted through this cut to see the inside of pelvis and abdomen. The surgeon identifies the cyst through the scope and removes the cyst. This technique is utilized to remove small cysts. If the cyst is too large or connected to ovarian tissue, the surgeon removes all or part of the ovary. Then the abdominal muscles are isolated to reach ovary. Then the cyst is removed.
