What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac Rehabilitation Cardiac rehabilitation is also called as cardiac rehab which is a medically supervised program for the people who had a heart attack, coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve surgery, or percutaneous coronary intervention. Cardiac rehab involves the adoption of a lifestyle which is heart-healthy and which changes to address the risk factors involves for cardiovascular disease. In order to help you in adopting such lifestyle changes, the program will include education on heart-healthy living, training, and counseling to reduce stress and assist you in returning to an active life again. It can improve your quality of life and health, decrease the chances of you going back to the emergency room or hospital for heart problems, reduce the need for medicines to treat chest pain or heart, prevent the future cardiac problems in order to assist you in living longer. Cardiac rehab is provided in a hospital rehab center or in an outpatient clinic. The cardiac rehab team will be consisting of nurses, doctors, exercise specialists, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists or dietitians, and also mental health specialists. Your cardiac rehab team will make a program to meet your required needs, and a case manager will help you in tracking your care. The rehab team will consider your medical history before starting with your program with doing a physical exam and performing tests. The tests possibly may include an electrocardiogram (EKG), treadmill, stationary bike exercise test, and a cardiac imaging test. You may also be having tests to measure the cholesterol and blood sugar levels. The time you will spend in the cardiac rehab will depend on your health conditions. The majority of the insurance plans will be covering a standard cardiac rehab program which will include 36 supervised sessions over 12 weeks.
