What is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy?

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy It is one among the best techniques utilized for treating larger kidney stones located in the kidney. It involves keyhole surgery with 1 cm incision in the skin. A small-PERC is similar in approach, but represents an improvement in the technique due to smaller cameras, better stone lasers and specialized tools. The incision that is made in the skin is much smaller and allows for quick recovery of the patient. What are the advantages? Allows for complicated stones to be treated in a minimally invasive fashion, which in the past this would have needed a large incision, and longer hospital stay. Hospital stay is now 2-4 days, and the recovery time is significantly minimal than the normal open surgical approaches. As the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, you should not consume for 6 hours prior to treatment. Regular medications can be taken with the elimination of blood thinning agents which need to be stopped for 7-10 days. A mid-stream urine (MSU) test is required to doom the urine is sterile before treatment is undertaken. Other tests required may be kidney functioning test, blood count, and a clotting profile.
